The Sorcerer class currently offers two subclass options: the Draconic Bloodline and Wild Magic. However, the Draconic Bloodline stands out as a more reliable choice. While Wild Magic tends to cause chaos and unexpected outcomes, Draconic Bloodline Sorcerers can easily control The Weave, ensuring better survivability due to extra HP and the Draconic Resilience passive, which boosts Armor when not wearing heavy gear.

Surprisingly, despite being spellcasters, Draconic Bloodline Sorcerers perform exceptionally well in both close combat and ranged attacks. Their higher AC and HP compared to other casters make them notably sturdy. Moreover, they can utilize Metamagic skills to enhance the effects of their spells, making close-range and area-of-effect (AoE) spells more accurate and powerful.

When creating a Draconic Sorcerer character, the Drow race proves to be an excellent choice. The Drow’s enhanced Darkvision aids spell targeting in the dark, and their Advantage on Perception through Keen Senses is valuable. Additionally, Drow cantrips like Dancing Lights, Faerie Fire, and Darkness offer situational usefulness.

For the best subclass, the Draconic Bloodline is recommended. It allows Sorcerers to choose a color of their Draconic Ancestry, providing a visual change to their character model and a new ability. Among the eight available Ancestry choices, Red and Black are particularly useful. The Red Ancestry grants Burning Hands, a short-range cleaving spell with Fire damage, while the Black Ancestry offers the Grease spell, which can be ignited with Fire and has a chance to knock enemies Prone.

Although the Wild Magic subclass is too unpredictable for a powerful Sorcerer build, Storm Sorcery is a decent alternative to the Draconic Bloodline due to the ability to Fly as a bonus action. Time will determine which subclass becomes the ultimate choice for Sorcerers.

For optimal proficiencies and background, the Noble or Sage backgrounds work well. They trigger Inspiration moments more frequently, with the Noble providing proficiency in History and Persuasion and an extra Class-based proficiency, while the Sage includes both Arcana and History, leaving an additional Proficiency available. Regardless of the background, Persuasion proficiency is essential, and Deception and Insight can be useful as well.

Here is a suggested list of cantrips and spells for a Draconic Sorcerer character:
